The SMP works like a directory providing all necessary information about the Peppol participants such as the Peppol ID, and information about supported document profiles and processes. Each provider of a Peppol access point provides and manages an own SMP.
During the sending process, the recipient specified in a message is identified in the corresponding SMP. Their access point is located and the message is transferred to the recipient.
Each Peppol recipient is required to be registered in an SMP. Peppol senders do not need to be registered in an SMP.
